Forum Topic: Vibes Players in Montreal

And by out there I mean on here, VW.

I've lived here for over a year and have yet to see another person playing jazz vibes. That being said, I know they are out there, somewhere. And there's a killer dude two hours from here at Sherbrooke university.

But there certainly aren't too many well known Canadian vibraphonists, that's for sure.

Anyway, holler if you're around.

Forum Topic: AJ Mantas

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know anything about the vibes player AJ Mantas who played with percussionist Norman Hedman, and the Joe Cuba Sextet for more than 30 years? He was killed near his home (I think NYC) by a hit-and-run driver in, I believe, 2012. He also played with Joe Bataan, Jose Mangual Jr.'s Son Boricua. If anyone can tell me the year of his birth I'll announce you on Good Vibes as a specialist in vibraphone history.
Anybody?

Forum Topic: radio show (Looking for Vibe Player CDs)

Hi fellow mallet enthusiasts---I'm brand-new to the site and checking things out for the first time, but I hope to be a semi-regular. I host a specialty radio show called "Johnny D’s Jazz Journal" every Sunday afternoon on KSDS-FM / "Jazz88.3" in San Diego, California. The station was named “Best Large Market Jazz Station in America” by JazzWeek magazine in 2011, and continues to be "the" source of jazz for this region.

Forum Topic: Mallets - How heavy is too heavy for 4-mallet playing?

A beginning student came to me yesterday ready to start lessons with a set of 4 Mike Balter 122R mallets. I've always used Burton or Friedman mallets - mallets designed by 4-mallet players - which don't have as much weight at the top. But I've often wondered how heavy a mallet can be before it gets too top heavy to play 4 mallets with.

Forum Topic: Milt Jackson Mallets

I have fallen in love with Promark Milt Jackson mallets. They're unlike any other mallet I've ever used - huge oval-shaped heads, heavy weight but wound with soft yarn. They are supposedly modeled after Milt's mallets. But someone knowledgeable about vibraphone construction has warned me that these mallets can be destructive to an instrument.

He says that the weight of the large head on these mallets can actually ruin the vibe keys. I respect his opninion but I am also skeptical about this warning.

Forum Topic: What Led Zeppelin stole

Hi everyone,
This link to a YouTube video will set you wise to many of Led Zeppelin's biggest hits and from whom they stole them, without giving credit on their albums. I post this here because I know Tony has recorded "Kashmir" with The Jost Project on their new CD. Although "Kashmir" is not included on the video, this is labeled by its producer, Juan Carlos Hernandez, as Part I.

This one is part III which I just found and haven't watched yet.

Forum Topic: Why it is hard to sight-read on mallet instruments...

I did a session the other day where I had to double a very specific part. It seemed like an easy pattern, but it changed in subtle ways over time. I was presented with 2 charts: one was a straight printout of the part - no repeats, lots of funny 16ths notes & rests, 6-pages long. The other, a chord-chart that showed the form (AAB, etc.). Even though the musicians involved were experienced pros, nobody spent much time on the chart. This is a very common situation now, as so much music originates out of computer files.

Forum Topic: Vibraphone forums

When I started to collect information about 'everything vibraphone' I entered 'vibraphone forums' in Google and it gave me two www sites (this one and the vibes.net?). The second one seemed to be abandoned and this one looks alive but with the total number of posts and slow rate of posting it's not easy to see it at the first sight.

I'm also registered at other musical instrument forums like guitar, sax, etc. and there are thousands of posts on those sites. Everything is moving there with dozens of posts every day.
