FOUR

Hi everybody ! Lately I've been working on memorising that John Coltrane solo on "Four". This morning, soon after breakfast, while still in my bedroom slippers, I recorded this version. I'm quoting the 1st 16 bars from Coltrane's solo to sort of kick me off (I had to bring the tempo down a bit) and the rest is my own. It's far from perfect, but I'm sure I can improve it by applying myself a bit more. I'm sort of happy, for once, because only two weeks ago, I wouldn't have done this. Cheers ! (PS : the rhythm section is me on drums + a Band-Box "real track".

K&K Example 1

This is audio example #1 for the Story Page called "Experimenting with Technology," about the K&K midi system.

CONFIRMATION - A fun little jam whipped-up in my 1990's midi studio, just a demo. The main synth/horn sound was created using 2 Oberheim Matrix-1000 synths, and a little bit of Roland D-50 & TX-7. The other musicians are pianist Matt King, guitarist Pat Bergeson, and bassist Chris Walker (who was a member of Ornette's PrimeTime band during this period).

Kuldòraku/Taiko Saito and Niko Meinhold

I've got several students and ex-students who knock me out with their original compositions and spectacular playing. I thought it might be of interest to the vibeworkshoppers to hear some of these young, up and coming vibists. I'm going to post two. Here's a piece by my ex-student, Taiko Saito, who won 1st prize at the International Vibraphone competition in Clérmont-Ferrand in France a couple of years ago. She has a wonderful duo with pianist, Niko Meinhold. She's also a fantastic marimbist and has a solo CD which is coming out on a norwegian label in May.

Green Etude Out of Control by Tony Miceli

So I was messing with the etude I wrote today. I wasn't digging the audio file which was the quantized part. So I went back to the original performance of the etude and started adding parts thinking this was the way to go. It started with one ding ding ding. Well it's about 2am and I am fried and I just started adding parts to this.

It Got Out of Control and I thought it was pretty funny. Here it is.
