Post your mini concerts for Feb. 25th, 2017 below. Put the links in, I'll embed the videos.

I LOVE MINI concerts. They are for everyone to participate and it's a virtual way of coming together. I like this as much as doing a concert in a theatre. I'm pretty shy and introverted but this is such a cool community thing that I just love seeing everybody play.

Roger who picked up the vibes by walking into one of my workshops and saying 'I've never played vibes before, what do I do'. Think about that and listen to him play. it's incredible. I think he has more gigs than me now btw!

Carolyn I met at a workshop also. She gives us a nice smile before she starts playing. I LOVE THE C F G thing she did on the bridge. I never thought of that! That's great! Listen to Carolyn's time. It's great! I love listening to play with good time play. They can be at any level. Good time means you have something that's presentable to an audience.

More people will join in I think. I'll keep posting their stuff as they submit it.

Hey Carolyn,
thank you for playing Whisper Magic. Sounds very good. And Green Dolphin Street feels good as well. You've improved so much. Way to go!!!

Sounds good, Carolyn. I like how you've mixed the latin/swing feels on Green Dolphin Street. Is that second piece a contemporary classical piece? I see where you get your chops from!

Sounds good, Roger! Have you tried playing any Bach pieces on the vibes? The way you are playing the second piece reminds me of Bach. There are a few books with simple arrangements of Bach pieces for vibes that are pretty cool.

Roger, I was just thinking about your playing as a "newbie" when I met you to how you play now...you've come so far! Keep up the great work because it's certainly playing off. I enjoyed listening to your tunes :)

Although I have a good knowledge of English I didn't get a word. Too bad cause seems very very cool and profound.
Carolyn could you, when you get some time off put all this in a letter form please ?
Thanks !
And I like your mini concert ! :-)))

Haaaa I was not expecting to see one of my study videos up here! Haha thanks Tony.
Patrice, I'll write out the lyrics and email them to you. I was learning about structuralism and semiotics...it's like another language! I hardly understand it, but I did pass my exam at least! :P

Hi Tony,
Happy you like it !
For Tenderly, it's a mix of gutiar things of mine, with some little things i found on the vibes.
For Besame Mucho, it's a reharm I did inspired by Ivan Lins, a GREAT brazilian pianist (and singer). I'm not accostumed to play this arrangement in solo vibes, but i thought it was a good opportunity to have a try at it...

great tunes matthew! i play in a band that does all protest music. and this is my favorite. i have played it duo with a violinist!

you picked two great tunes and did a great job with them. time is GREAT and the solos sounded nice!

i'm actually amazed at everyone's time on this mini concert. that's really cool to hear all this good time!

Thanks Tony! That sounds awesome, do you guys have recordings up anywhere? It's my favorite too. I play in a trio sometimes that refers to it as "our theme song". It's a great set closer.

Matthew, you seem to do a great job of playing harmonies while you solo. My goal is to be able to do that as well as you did in your concert here. Nice playing!

Here's the link to my two tunes. I had been working on Confirmation and saw that Tony was going to do it, so I thought I would give it a try. The other, Isfahan, is a tune I did a vibes/piano arrangement of recently, some of which I'm trying to incorporate in the solo version.

Thanks, Patrice. If anyone's got any critical feedback. I welcome that too! I felt like I was rushing on Confirmation in some parts and I almost lost it a few times on Isfahan. Time is definitely the hardest thing when playing solo.

I really enjoyed what you did with that second solo. It had that catchy phrase that you repeated, was very dramatic, and had great voicings.

on my solo cd i do a blues and it's almost all 2 mallets. who cares right? if the harmony comes out that's fine. however i get it. for the sake of learning we want to grab things other people do and steal it and put it into our playing. i do it as much as i can! :-)

Awesome Tristan! I didn't hear you rushing, so it certainly wasn't very noticeable if it was there. Impressive choice of tunes and great handling of both of them!

patrice,
you have come a long way. it's great to listen to you play! i wish we could do a vibe festival, have a bunch of great players come. one night, all solo, the next night same guys play with a band.

great job!

I share the same passion for soloing Tony. I think that there is still a lot to explore ...... even if Gary said musically everything about it ...... there is still room for personnal exploration.
Very good idea indeed to put vibes soloing in front line with special night dedicated. Not that easy to keep audience attention for 20 minutes or more ......

Wow, you've got a really nice touch. The left hand stuff in the first tune is really great. What is that tune? I don't recognize it. Mallets sound really nice too.

Rogerhdg Sat, 02/25/2017 - 22:32

In reply to by tonymiceli

I've played this through twice and I will do so many more times. What I like about your playing ( and that of D Friedman) is that you so strongly emphasize the tune in your right hand mallets while filling in quietly all the accompanying chords in mostly the left hand. Almost sounds like a duet.

Patrice Sun, 02/26/2017 - 13:53

In reply to by Rogerhdg

You actually right when you says that that kind of soloing sounds like duet. Actually for most of the part I think two single lines that I harmonize now and then. This is Gary's teaching. Gary pushed this concept in his ultimate perfection in solo playing. Music is endless. We can be inspired each one at our level.

Patrice, you sound great. Very nice playing! You get a beautiful sound out of the instrument. Hope we hear more solo playing from you.

I deeply appreciate your comment Christos. It's moving having good and kind words from players we admire. Thanks again. :-)
