I just wanted to post something for us two mallet folks:) It's about Chuck Redd, who I think is a terrific vibraphonist and drummer. He played for years with Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, and many others. I had the pleasure of speaking with him on the phone yesterday for about an hour, and among other things, shared some of his memories of Milt Jackson. Based on my email and phone interactions with him, I have to say I think Chuck is a first class guy all the way.

Chuck is a two mallet player in the style of Milt Jackson. He told me about a solo piece he recorded on one of his own solo recordings called "The Common Thread" and the solo piece is "The Shadow of Your Smile". He told me he was inspired by Milt Jackson's solo recording of "Nature Boy". Here is the Nature Boy link:

Below is a link to mp3 samples from Chuck's recording, the solo piece is cut 10:

I have also come to really like a Charlie Byrd trio recording of vibes, bass and guitar, with Chuck on vibes, no drums on this one, it's called "Au Courant":

Anyway, I just thought I'd toss this out there:)

I love Charlie Byrd. I have a few of his albums. I didn't know that he played with vibes. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
