Considering that this is a "desert island" question I am primarily concerned with the type and quality of companionship that would be available to me as I endure the long days waiting for rescue. Either Maryann or Ginger would be fine. I'm not picky.

If either Maryann or Ginger did happen to have a CD player I would be fond of listening to:
Cal Tjader: A Night at the Blackhawk, Soul Sauce and Latin Concert
Milt Jackson: A Jazz Skyline, Very Tall w/Oscar Peterson
Lem Winchester: With Feeling
Mike Mainieri: Man Behind Bars, anything Steps Ahead
Red Norvo: Any trio recording with Tal Farlow
Gary Burton: Easy as Pie, Picture This, Crystal Silence
Jimmy Smith: Back in the Chicken Shack
Lucky Thompson: Lucky Strikes
John Scofield: Loud Jazz, Blue Matter
Joe Satriani: The Extremist
Jeff Beck: Wired

Doc, if you're on a desert island you wouldn't be playing any CD's since you wouldn't have any electricity. OR...once you failed to pay your desert island electric bill, you'd be rescued and wouldn't be on a desert island anymore.

Ah, my top 5 albums. Very tough, but I think I have got a good mix here.

Mahler Symphony #2 "The Resurrection"

The Mars Volta "The Bedlam in Goliath" or "Amputechture"

Metallica: S & M

Caribbean Jazz Project "Mosaics"

Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to the Music of Buddy Rich Vol. 1

Not listed in any particular order.

Honorable mention...Red Hot Chili peppers "Californiacation," Beethoven 7, The Glory and the Grandeur- Russell Peck, Bob Curnow Music of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays....

Maybe I should have included the "LOST" soundtrack....

What with iPods and shuffle play, I tend to think of tracks instead of CDs, but here's some of my favorites.

  • Milt Jackson, "Sunflower" -- not your typical Milt, but I just love Herbie's playing on this.
  • Chick Corea/Return to Forever, "Light as a Feather" -- "Spain" and "500 Miles High", what can beat it?
  • Ed Saindon & Kenny Garner, "Key Play" -- "My Romance" stops me in my tracks each time I hear it.
  • Chick Corea & Gary Burton, "Native Sense" -- Yah, "Live in Zurich" is great too, but this one works better for me.
  • Michel Camilo, "Thru My Eyes" -- all Latin, absolutely burning version of "St. Thomas"

anyway we'll all work together and have fun. there's a big diverse range of you guys!

Yeah, Steve Nelson burns.... they all sound great - I love Mulgrew's compositions/playing. I first saw Mulgrew playing with Tony Williams' Quintet and was blown away. (This is the first time I heard Lewis Nash - one of my favorite drummers. )

"Hand In Hand"

Mulgrew Miller - piano
Eddie Henderson - trumpet
Kenny Garrett - alto/sop. sax
Joe Henderson - ten. sax
Steve Nelson - vibes
Christian McBride - bass
Lewis Nash - drums

i have to check and see if i have that. i have no idea what music i have any more. it's all digital with no visual images to store in my damn brain. that makes it hard to remember what cds i have!!

you're right mulgrew is a monster. i've played with his bassist derek hodges who's an absolute genius to the highest magnatude. he has a mind and ears like a mozart. those guys together, it's incredible.

I like having the actual CD/case for the art work, and liner notes, etc.... Make sure you bring your CD's to the workshop!

That's funny! How have you been since May/Sunside? A bit later after meeting you I remembered seeing your name on some French programs... I hope all is well for you and that you will sell your Aurora soon!
