This is a very cool piece that Chick Corea wrote for Gary Burton and pianist Karill Gerstein a pianist.
Here's the email from Gary talking about his recording:
I thought I should let you know that last week a new recording was released: Chick Corea’s THE VISITORS, performed by Gary Burton and Kirill Gerstein. Here’s the background story. In the 1990s, when I had a day off in St Petersburg, Russia, I was taken to a local Russian jazz festival to meet some local musicians. Among them was a 12-year old prodigy pianist. I didn’t hear him play but he gave me a cassette which I listened to a week or two later. He was really impressive, and I undertook getting him out of Russia. It took two years, but finally all the legal steps were completed and Kirill and his mother came to Boston to Berklee at 14. We converted two dorm rooms into a small apartment for him and his mother to live in while he was a student. He was very popular at the school, playing in several top ensembles, taking lessons with me and others. After Berklee he went on to Manhattan School in NYC and got his masters degree in classical music. A few years later he started winning major international piano competitions, including one in 2010 that came with a $300,000 prize. He decided to use some of that money to commission new works from major composers. That led to proposing that Chick Corea write a duet piece for me and Kirill. In 2012, we got the music from Chick and performed it twice, once at Berklee and again at the 2012 Gilmore Piano Festival. We only found out recently that the Gilmore people had made a high quality recording of that performance and when we heard it, we really wanted to get it released somehow. At that point, Manfred Eicher of ECM Records entered the picture and decided to take it on. He and Kirill mixed and mastered it in Munich, and it was released last week on June 12, which happened to be Chick’s birth date. It runs 12 minutes, is a mix of contemporary classical and jazz, some written and some sections improvised. I’m pleased to see it available to the public. It’s kind of a last minute addition to my vibes legacy. And I‘m extremely proud to have something with Kirill, who is one of the top piano soloists in the world these days (he’s now 45, lives in Berlin.)
