Here's some thoughts on using 4ths to create interesting comping lines. I love how Bill Evans uses 4ths so fluidly. Stacked 4ths lay really nice on the vibe and you can take them in many directions.

Using a metronome to practice with.

This (see attached pics) is where I spend a few hours everyday. It's a room-within-a-room, in my basement. Soundproof for the people next door, and for my family upstairs. I start soon after breakfast, always with the vibes, still trying to tame that Vanderplas. Then I move to the drums (1970 Gretsch mounted with Earthtone heads) and let steam off. Then a Havana cigar, and a streetwise book. My grandson Steven plays alto. He knows more at 13 than I did at 20. My buddies Laurent (bass) and JM join me a couple of times a week for sessions.

OK... when I first told Tony about this, I realized immediately that I have kept this hidden for years because, frankly, I am embarrassed at the way I wrote it. It was 30+ years ago and I had more than just a little youthful attitude. It sucks in that way. Here's the deal though... if anyone out here can benefit from what I started then I should put it out here and trust those of you who know me to understand that a kid younger than my own children are now wrote this.

I'm kinda new at this "posting" business, I hope I've put it in the right place.

So...
I remember a few years ago that Ed Saindon, Tony Miceli and John Piper all recorded a solo version of a tune. Was it Dolphin Dance? It doesn't really matter what tune it was. It was an awesome introspection into three great player's approach to the same material. If this is not still available with a click of the mouse, (Tony) could it be?

Everybody must check these out. Alternatively: Let's do it again. It really was the coolest.

Just a quick tip when working on tunes. This sort of gets you into the zone of the tune. It's a good warm up to ensure that you know the changes of the tune.
