Adrian Rollini - First 4-mallet player?

Hi folks,

Just saw this video, and was wondering if perhaps Adrian Rollini was the first documented 4-mallet vibist? I was surprised by his technique. He was a multi-instrumentalist who also played sax, but I can't think of anyone else playing 4 mallets like this as far back as the '30s and '40s.

Obviously, they are playing along with a pre-recorded track. But you gotta love the tubular bells solo!!

Mic placement

Hi everyone,

This post is further to my shoutout earlier on...

I've just ordered a pair of SE1as on trial from SE-Electronics.
You can see them here: http://www.seelectronics.com/se1a-pair-mic
They're pencil condensors - perhaps not the perfect mic, but a massive step up from the dynamics I've been using up until now.

I think they come with a stereo bar, so that you can put both mics on one stand, and separate them slightly.

Does anyone set their mics up like this when playing live? Does it work as well as placing them apart?

Khan Jamal

I noticed that Khan Jamal became a member here about six weeks ago, and I've been listening to his album Peace Warrior over the last two days. His playing is just exceptional and soulful, and he is a recent discovery for me. I had heard of him as a result of a Downbeat interview several decades ago, but really never checked him out until he played on Matthew Shipp's album Equilibrium from a couple of years ago. It is my understanding that Mr. Jamal became ill after that album's release but appears to be recovering and playing again.

Big Band Vibes

Advice anyone...?

I just found out nobody is playing vibes in the jazz group at the college I graduated from (so sad, but fortunate for me!), so since I'm still in the area, they're letting me play again. As a student I was the first vibes player for the band (you can see how popular this instrument is at my school...), so I did a lot of experimenting to see how I would fit in with so many instruments (sometimes I transposed the horn parts, sometimes I played off the piano, sometimes there was actually a written-out vibes part...).
