Days 5 and 6
Man I just read Dana's blog. he's right, the opportunity is here, we should ALL be blogging. Well no should's or shouldn'ts as my wife would say. But blogging would help the learning process here.
I wish the pros would blog more often. Just talk about what's up and talk about what's going on in there heads.
I can relate to Dana listening back to himself. I always said, if I had my own music college:
Mandatory recording device for each student.
Mandatory Journal (daily)
Mandatory Recording yourself playing several things each day.
You've been very gracious to share so much about your life in music. I am hoping you might share a bit about two of your more unusual recordings, "Tennessee Firebird" and "Time Machine." I have always been fond of both. How did you collect all those Nashville musicians in one place? Who is Walter L? Overdubbing was still in its infancy when you recorded "Time Machine." How were the people at RCA to work with? And one last question. Was that you carrying the vibe bars on the cover of your first album "New Vibe Man in Town"?

Day 1
6:40am. I stumble off the American Airlines flight from Miami after a mostly sleepless flight. The first thing I notice is that all the airport workers are wearing medical masks and rubber gloves. Guess they’re taking the flu seriously down here. In the baggage area I am concerned because there are no carts in sight. I have five pieces of luggage (three vibes cases, two personal luggage).
[Reminder to self: call Mark, my trusty case maker in Massachusetts, and order a replacement for the large case. This one won’t last much longer.]
This video made me smile, really big, and I wanted to post it here. Then I saw that Tifoo posted it. Even better!

Hey everyone, just got back from San Francisco last week, and I'm happy to say that my group with saxophonist Ken Fowser earned the Generations fellowship for 2009. There's a cool article about it, you can go here: http://www.creativearts.sfsu.edu/node/998
I just checked out Tony's myspace page and listened to him playing 4 and 1. That's some mighty fine vibin' there. Could you talk about that piece? If it's not here somewhere I think others would really enjoy it.
I transcribed this a while ago. I haven't played through it in a while but I think I had worked all the kinks out of the notation. Please let me know if you find errors. This solo comes from a Bruce Foreman album "Full Circle w/Bobby Hutcherson".

It's an interesting coincidence that the week after Gary was blogging about working with Astor Piazzolla, I received a phone call from a friend of mine inquiring if I wanted to play some tango gigs with him as a duo - he would play violin and I would play accordion. So I said okay on the condition that the music has to be played right - no shucking and jiving through a group of tango tunes, and Lou (the violinist) was completely on board with that.
I've been listening a lot to Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" on "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" album. I have also been listening to other arrangements including the one from the Kenny Baron/Joe Locke CD entitled "But Beautiful", as well as other arrangements on the net.
I have a head arrangement worked out but am still working on the C Minor Blues that follows. I started playing along with the solos on Nelson's CD to give me ideas.
