i was inspired by behns post playing a tune with just lines and as i was currently practicing donna lee i thought to use this tune for it. here´s the result with some blue notes in the theme...like always...

p.s. next is working on different keys...i know. working on it.

you did a great job! i remember studying that tune also! and doing the same things! so it was fun to listen to you.

however.... check out the beginning. I think you add 2 beats in the beginning of the tune. am i wrong? I think in your mind you're starting the melody on 1 and not 3. The error is during the Bb7. I had a student do a simlar thing.

yes you are right!

i noticed this while i heard it...funny this happenes only if i play it solo.when i practice it with band in a box, i do it correct. but solo i hear that first phrase on 1 frequently.i did in both themes.

you have any tip how to start such a complex melody in different keys? i mean normally i try to relate the melody to the chords, like ok it starts on maj7 of the first chord then down the bebop sclae etc. but in this theme there are so many notes and passing through notes it doesn´t work like this...

well, i would go one bar at a time, and i would know that my goal is to just eventually hear it through the keys. but in the beginning just do it how ever.

the other important thing would be to do it VERY slow. that's the trick so that you take time to listen to it.

part of my time would be taking one phrase and playing it through all the keys, maybe just one bar.

in this way it comes together through many different angles.

i do the chord things sometimes, and sometimes it's just the melody, knowing what happens. but eventually when you're studying a tune your ear will start doing the work, maybe with a little help from your brain.

when i did this tune i felt totally different after it was over. i felt like i really was beginning to understand the sounds of things. and in all keys. you have to admit, this is a gold mine of sounds. 13s, flat 9s, minor 2 5s. it's a pretty cool tune.

Tarik,

I did this a few years back, and one thing to do is just play it REALLY SLOW like tony says. And try to use ears most. Eventually it took me a while but with trial and error you'll get it right and suddenly you are playing the melody without thinking in other keys. And that's so cool!!

Tarik,

One more thing. straighten out your eighth notes. It sounds kind of funny to me if you swing the eight notes like you are doing. Remember this is an up-tempo tune, so the eighth notes are going to be pretty even when you speed it up. So try to think more slow-motion then slow. Understad what I mean?

thanks tj,

i know what you mean but i did this on purpose to practice my swing phrasing and to beat 2 flies with one routine :)

it starts to work that way ... after one key it´s not that much difficult anymore to play it in more keys then on my first try. but it´s still hard to get rid of the try and error mistakes :(

vibraman Fri, 09/10/2010 - 07:17

ok it´s cool to post those things because now i can see how long it took me to play it in Bbmaj. it´s horrible for me to play that melody in a different key but i make slow progress. here it is in Bbmaj slow and with mistakes but anyway...

it´s funny if i play it now in the original key i sometimes mix it up with Bbmaj but i think it´s normal...it just needs more work. next will be cmaj.

You rock Vibraman!! That's a damn huge job you did there!! :o)

Just... c'mon kick off that stupid metronome! I mean just change it, cuz I'm sure it's great to play with it, but that sound is so... unfriendly!! There are def. better ones!! It sounds like sabotaging your work and excellent result!! :o)

My 2 cents... but you know it already! ;-)

Go supa-vbraman!!!

Sure... That was not nice of me... So maybe just gently put him back and leave him a little place in your practice room to rest from those long years of hard work? No? :o)

wow that's great. you are doing it. and it sounds great.

i think you should slow down the head and get all the notes right.

and now that you really know the changes, start working in the diminished and altered scales. adding all those upper partials in your chords and adding those altered tones. know what i mean? do you know where to stick them?? (in america everybody would laugh after that last sentence.)
do you know how to use them?

sorry to bring this boring thing back on top again but here it is in cmaj. still mistakes but it took me one week less than last time.i tried to play more modern on the dominant chords this time.

tonymiceli Tue, 09/21/2010 - 20:39

hey man you're doing a great job!

i think you should stick with that key for a moment and work out some lines with the altered stuff in it. hang here for a second. that's what i did. sometimes i'd stay in a key for 3 weeks and just work stuff out.

because remember you'll carry it ALL to the next key!!!!

i hope you're coming to holland, we'll work on all this!
