Hi vibes friend today i'd like to talk about my favorite scales for plaing over Dom 7th chords. I'm not a big fan of modes and scales in general because I tend to think about the tonal area when playing a song (especially simple standard song) but when I play over dom 7th chords and I want to express some tensions I use one of those scales:
1. Altered on C7alt (Melodic Minor starting from the 7th degree of the scale)
e.g. C altered scale is a Db melodic minor starting from C)
2. Symmetrical on C7b9 (Half tone, Whole Tone)
A little afternoon practice today on John Coltrane’s classic “Giant Steps”.
My school had an informal recital this month, so I jumped at the opportunity to play. Feels like a VWS mini concert because I only had a few weeks to prep and could only play a couple tunes. I edited the applause out of this recording, but here you have my October mini concert.
For those unfamiliar with Tony's mini concert challenges, all you need to do is choose three tunes and record them (video or audio) without stopping. They don't need to be perfect (as you can tell from my recording), you just need to play and post. Always a humbling and motivating experience.
