Hello everyone!
Doing something a little bit different and doing a couple lessons on playing basslines. Basslines, I think, are extraordinarily helpful both for practical reasons (like while playing duo and getting new textures) and also just to force you to truly understand the changes of a tune. The first part of the series is on note choice.
This is a steady stream of weaving through the changes of Donna Lee
Can you memorize it and play it through different.
While you're doing this and playing this, you have to see the chords in the back of your head.
Interesting Chord Inversions
I know I've done this before. But I've been doing with all my students lately. Here's another version.
Learn one of the songs on this Sonny Rollins video.
As you see he doesn't have a chord player in the band. So you just got the job.
1. comp for his solo and the bass solo.
2. He takes long ass solos, so solo over top of him for a bit and then switch to accompanying him on his solo.
Make sure you have decent sound so that this is fun!
If you learned all the tunes, you could see what it's like playing a whole concert!
Here's one of my versions on Marmaduke. I have been playing the tune every day! I love it!
