My name is Steve Roehm. I'm a vibist out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I get to play solo vibraphone at the MSP International Airport every week.
So here's a rendition of "Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You" before everything shut down.

In this post I am focussing on milling of the bar.
This is classic Lionel Hampton. It has all his tricks and signature moves. That is Ray Brown on bass and Buddy Rich on drums, so Lionel was right at home.
It's from the mid 1950's so it shows the influence that some of the more modern players like Milt Jackson were already starting to have on his playing. Mostly, his subdivisions are close to a triplet feel, but he does vary it and sometimes play straight eighths and other times, a dotted eighth/sixteenth feel.
It's the most famous "pop" song every written so I had to do it.
Feels really good to be back in the Vibesworkshop after a long time! I hope everybody is well and coping with things.
Here is how I incorporated clave on solo vibes, at a recent masterclass at Ithaca College. Give it a try! The turnaround is III-VI-II-V.
You play the head then we trade 2 choruses and then you play and then take the melody out.
You know the drill. This is the tune Four.
You write in the chords, study my voicings.
Are they rootless?
What parts of the chords are there.
Then play it.
The second chorus is a simple solo outling the harmony.
