Here's a version of Lush Life from a while back. I was working on 2 things here. You'll here the octaves as soon as the main melody starts and you'll hear me going into the stride stuff after a while.

I always try and play some tunes as if I'm walking out on a stage, work them up with some ideas and then perform them for real. That's what's great about recording yourself, you HAVE to listen back. And you WANT to, so you do. You hear your good stuff and your bad stuff. I have cassette tapes here from 20 years ago and you can hear my time all over the place. I don't know if it's perfect now, but I've come along way from when I had my Pro-Walkman. Remember those! Mine was on EVERY day!

That's slightly out of character for the way you usually play and it's still beautifully done. I love your playing and am trying to add some of you to my playing.

Thanks Tony.

Holy crap that was gorgeous!

Do you listen to or play music by Debussy? There were a few times during your playing that I immediately thought of specific phrases from his piano music.

Great stuff man!

that's funny cause i never thought he really rubbed off on me, although, i went through a lot of his piano music thoroughly back in the day. was it him or ravel that did a piece called bells or something. that was my fav. man that's 10 15 years ago. i'm getting old.

Wow! Another master piece of interpretation Tony! Beautiful! :o)
Tell me around 2"32, what is that effect you got? Is that the "Special wow wow Locke strick" or is it just the motor giving that vibration of the sound?
And... I love the groove around 6"34! Makes me think of your "I got the blues" kind of mischievous swing! Great! By the way did you post that one too? If not, I think you should!... My fav! :o)

i recorded this in a program called Cubase for the PC. It's a great program. I put on chorus and tremelo. So you hear the 'effects'. if you heard the original version with NO effects it would sound different. not the notes but that sound of the instrument. I like fattening up the sound with chorus, but i personally get nervous when i rely too much on a sound that's made with effects. I get nervous that i'll grow uncomfortable with the natural sound of the instrument and won't be able to play that sound.

Hmmmm, i'm doing a video tonight. maybe i'll take the audio and make a version with the chorus and one with out.

(EVERYBODY ELSE - do you see how hip Marie is. Even though she doesn't play the instrument she listens REALLY hard. she must have great focus. let's have some applause for our French friend!)

Cubase! I can't believe it! That's really disappointing! ;o) I thought you had made that cool effect by yourself, not a computer!! :o(
Ok then. I'll survive to this... :o)

Wait and see your new video version...

And... stop saying I’m hip... you get me nervous! ;o)

i recorded that right after mike m played at pasic here in the states. i heard he played a beautiful rendition of it.

that inspired me, not of course to be competitive but just to be inspired and do my own version.

mainieri is a god to me and i'm a mortal. i just wanted to study it with the inspiration i got from hearing about his performance. i didn't see it, but it was described as breathtaking.

for me mainieri is of the highest order!

To give us such beautiful music ! Did you ever tought to do a CD with your best work like this ? There is all the right sound gear nowadays to masterise, clean up and edit sounds, no matter how old they are. It would be such a great album !

Philippe Tue, 10/11/2011 - 01:00

Wow Tony, that's the best version of Lush Life I've ever heard. No kidding. Like Babu, I think you should collect all you stuff and produce an album. Blusette, Lush Life, Cherokee, and all the solo pieces you have played. That would be a sensation.

Philippe Mace Tue, 10/11/2011 - 12:25

Beautiful Tony, control and expression. Very inspiring !

You made my day! What a beautiful, heartfelt rendition of this tune! There's technique and there's music but in this piece you've made the difference indistinguishable.

arturo serra Tue, 10/11/2011 - 17:09

tonymiceli Tue, 10/11/2011 - 19:22

i couldn't play that now. i forgot it. the modulations and all that.

but it's cool you guys dig it. you're all a huge inspiration. we're all players and listeners. and we're all kind of equals in a way. i dig that. we all play and study together.

viva la vibraphone!

this is really a gem but beside that thanks tony for your honest words that you couldn´t do it today because you forgot. i always think that if i hear anything i did longer than 4 months ago already. it´s good to know i am not alone with this and even pro´s like you deal with the same problem in a way.

Vaggelis Tue, 10/11/2011 - 21:03

Tony!My jaw dropped!Your interpretation has everything I want to achieve as a musician! One of the best versions I have ever heard!Thank you for sharing this!
