Forum Topic: refurbishing a Deagan 30 -- advice appreciated!

I just picked up an old Deagan model 30; the budget vibes that they made in the late-1930s/early-'40s. It has 2-1/2 octaves, cardboard resonator tubes and a single-speed motor. It needs a bit of work, but I'm not too intimidated by it. However, I could use some advice! Here's what I know needs to be done:

1. Unstring the bars and polish them; they're pretty tarnished. I have a motorized buffing wheel with a variety of mops and rouges, but I could use advice about what specifically might work best.

Forum Topic: Dead bar?!

Hi All-

This is a new one for me; in an iso booth recording, and it seems as though my highest G natural is somehow dead. I thought it was the resonator, but it seems to have less than 1/3rd of the sustain of the bars around it, whether the resonator flaps are open, closed, or in motion.

I've been playing these bars for 15+ years and this is the first I've noticed it. Seems like a new problem, but nothing looks different about the bar, at least on the playing side. Anyone else have this happen? What could I do about it?

Thanks-

JAmes

Forum Topic: Old Bodine motor

I just purchased an old (1940s?) Ludwig vibraphone. It has a Bodine motor with an attachment that looks to me like a friction speed control. There is a knob you twist that presses a felt pad against a spinning disk to, I guessing, slow the motor and change the speed of the rotation of the butterflies. There are some other parts on the motor shaft that I think are heat sinks. I am thinking of cannibalizing the Ludwig to use the motor on another vibe set I have (can't tell you what it is because I bought it used and it has no identifying marks of any kind).

Forum Topic: Musser Pro-vibe Wheels

Hi All,

I'm trying to find out information on the exact wheels for the Musser Pro-Vibe M55 as I have had one of the wheels go missing in transit at one of my schools.

Does anyone know if they have a specific model number or name... or better yet where to get them from easily?

Whilst I'm on the topic, I like the M48 Pro traveller wheels much better and would be keen to track down a set of them to replace on my personal instrument....

Any leads?

Forum Topic: Bar cord tension

Hi .-)

I got a used Adams VSWV31 Soloist vibe and it sounds great (...and yeah, all bars are in tune !).

Because the bar cords were very worn out, i got a new set... Which leads me to the question if there is any advice on setting a proper bar cord tension? How much tension should be on the cord springs? Are there any 'thumb-rules'?

best regards, Jenzz

Forum Topic: The Start

Looking forward to working with you all on this forum again: reminds me back to the old glory days of the vibe.net
Indeed Tony has been pushing me a lot to do this. Not that I never wanted to, but just didn't find the right moment to start.

Feel free to ask whatever, but do realize that I cannot answer everything, e.g. don'ask for an opinion on brands, etc.

Topics could be like:
- My F5 sounds dead, what do I do about it?
- How come, you're building vibes?
- My wheels fall out of my vibe, what to do?

etc.
