New Works Commissioned for Vibraphone & Percussion Trio

Hello everyone. Last year at the World's Vibe Congress we discussed, among a multitude of other topics, how to create greater exposure for the vibraphone. One of the possibilities we discussed was creating new pieces and works which feature the vibraphone by skilled composers. Over the past 8 months my percussion trio, Portal Percussion, has been working with Colleen Clark, a musician & composer based in NYC, on creating a piece of music which embodies the spirit of the discussion last January.

What does the piece entail?

Why there aren't a lot of big names that play the vibraphone in latin jazz (by dimitrios angelakis).

I am doing a presentation about the vibraphone in latin jazz music as part of my thesis and I realized after talking to Tony today that there aren't so many vibes player in this music as there are in piano. I know Tito, Cal, Samuels and Christos but how come no really big names like Eddie Palmieri or Chucho Valdes.
What do you guys think about that?

I would appreciate all your comments because not often some is speaking about those stuff and it's part of my presentation.
Thank you all for your time!

Stella by starlight solo vibes by Dimitrios Angelakis by dimitris angelakis

Hi all,

This is stella by starlight on solo vibes. The first is a pre-composed solo and the second is a jamming with the latin feel.
The reason I pre-composed the solo is because that way it's easy to practice specific things. It's the same when you practice a pre-composed solo.

thanks and enjoy

All The Things - Chord Tone Soloing by Ed Saindon -V

Hey guys, I hope All The Things is still TOTM. Here are a few choruses on All The Things using chord tones. I think it's important to be able to improvise with strictly chord tones and try to make it sound as musical as possible. It's not easy since all of the notes are stable notes, but only using chord tones allows us to focus on other issues like smoothly making the connection from chord to chord, use of motives, time feel, experimenting with various rhythms, starting phrases in different places in the measure, beginning a phrase on an upbeat vs.

Percussive Notes articles

Hello everyone, if anyone is interested in writing an article for the Percussive Arts Society magazine Percussive Notes, please email me for the details and to discuss possible topics. The article could be on topics associated with the vibraphone, vibe playing and/or improvisation. There is a small honorarium paid when the article is published. I have a few articles scheduled for the next few issues at this point, but it would be nice to get a few more for future issues. My email is esaindon@berklee.edu Thanks. Ed
