I am a sax player and want to start playing vibes; I'm having a hard time deciding what to buy. I'm fortunate in that a couple of thousand dollars either way doesn't make a huge difference to me if it means getting an instrument that sounds better to me and/or is easier to play. For whatever it's worth, I've always been a huge fan of Milt Jackson's sound. I have a fairly large music room at home; portability might become an issue in the future if I want to play with other musicians. I'm 6'2" so height adjustability might also be an issue. I'd prefer to start with a professional instrument that I can stick with for the duration rather than something I will out grow; that's what I did when I started on sax 3 years ago and I'm glad I did (I play a Selmer ref 54 tenor and a Yani straight soprano); I have gone through a few mouthpieces as my embouchure got better but I don't think I'll ever have to replace those instruments. I haven't been able to find vibes to try out; stores don't carry them; I bought my tenor online before I learned to play so I'm comfortable with that process. After reading through the threads on this site the most logical choices seem to be a Musser M55 or a VDP gig vibe; I love the look of the blue bars of the vdps and they sound great on youtubes, but so do the mussers; of course it depends on whose playing them! I'd welcome any suggestions sofferm@optonline.net
