This is a very special post to me. Its story is beautiful! Dana wrote this lovely Christmas song a few years ago (lyrics included) and recorded it with a singer and pianist. Last July, he invited me to do a new version on vocals. I was much honored by his proposal and we agreed to work on it for this Christmas.

But I got my vibes in August. And Dana (very cleverly and subtly) pushed me to add a vibes part... making it more difficult than originally planned!! I had some hard time learning the part... a part that Dana had very nicely specially written for me. But he never gave up encouraging me and putting me at rest. Amazing Dana!! This experience was a great chance for me and a lot of fun! Thank you so much Dana!

There, he plays the marimba and percu, and last added a lovely Glock sound... that he did on the highest notes of his gorgeous 4 oct. Vdp.

Here is the result... a vibes master/composer and a singer/vibes beginner offering you the first Christmas present on the site...

Happy Holidays everyone !

- Marie

She acts shy but in truth she was able to play the vibe part after one or two days!
(in case it isn't clear, Marie plays the vibes part and the solo!)

Thank you for singing my song Marie.

wow thank you both for putting me the first time into christmas mood. i mean it´s realy cold here in germany and then i heared this. nice song dana and nice performance of marie on vibes and voice. marie your voice sounds really wonderful on this recording.

tedwolff Fri, 12/03/2010 - 15:47

Dana - very nice tune, both hip and sweet. Man we need some new Christmas tunes! You wrote the lyric too?
Marie - your singing is so confident and yet reserved. Reminds me of Astrud Gilberto. And a nice vibes solo. You had a cool rhythmic displacement thing going for part of it. Pretty advanced!

vibeman27 Fri, 12/03/2010 - 19:09

Dana you are a real pro, putting that together with Marie. Marie you sound wonderful singing and I was very surprised when Dana "cleared up" some facts about the vibes. I really thought you played the vibe part and Dana the solo. Dana made it clear that you did both, the part and the solo. Kudos to you for sticking with Dana until you got it. It is very nice.

BarryK Fri, 12/03/2010 - 21:23

Dana, that could easily become a classic Christmas tune. Beautiful recording Marie, and Dana. I loved it! Brava, Marie, on your vibes and vocal performance.

tonymiceli Fri, 12/03/2010 - 23:06

that's incredible you guys! dana great arrangement! and MARIE great vibe playing!! jeeeeezzz!!!

Eric Fri, 12/03/2010 - 23:24

Great job to both of you. Nice tune and beautifully played!

Marie-Noëlle Sat, 12/04/2010 - 03:36

Thanks a lot everyone for your nice words to us!

- Voice: thanks to Tarik and Philippe's encouragements/info, I bought myself a Rode NT1-A mic that truly made the difference on the voice recording.

- Vibes: Bruce, man if you could think Dana was playing the solo, it proves that he did a terrific job of "hiding", mainly with the percu, cuz the vibes track alone could never have fooled you!! I wasn't happy with it (mistakes, tons of imperfections and pedal noises). But Dana once more said it would be ok, so I trusted him and decided to accept it as it was.

Thank you all for such nice comments about the recording. All I can say is, Marie deserves all the credit for selling this tune.

@Ted - I wrote the lyrics/tune years ago for a trio (vibes/piano/vocal) album of holiday music released in 2004(?). I always thought the lyrics were a bit sappy. We only made about 200 copies. I wanted to re-record that song with a full band but then hearing Marie's pretty voice on various recordings, I thought, she would be perfect for this song. Then magically, she also got her own vibraphone. So I improvised an "easy" part and solo on the mallet controller, cleaned up the notation a little and sent her the audio and chart. She learned it in like 2 days. Go Marie!

@Barry - Ha! I wish!

Marie, I'm totally knocked out over your vibe playing! AND I love the feeling you project with your voice. I have to be honest....REALLY sexy!

Thank you so much David! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :o)

Well isn't music all about senses... and so about sensuality. ;-)

Still I would like all due rewards to be given back to Dana. He wrote those beautiful lyrics, melody and vibes part. It's also him who proposed me, put me totally at ease and let me feel completely free in the interpretation (though I took a lot from the original singer's version who did a very nice job).

Dana might sound discreet on this audio track, but even though I did sing/play the lyrics/vibes part, he's at the origine and in fact behind every note! :o)

Hi Dana and Marie-Noelle,

That was beautiful. I think you should take it on the road. Maybe a Xmas album for next year?

gloria krolak Sun, 12/05/2010 - 13:00

Marie-Noelle and Dana,
My Christmas show is already taped and airing tonight (the 5th of Dec), but if I had had permission from both of you to play your "Soulflakes" duet I would have included it. So gentle and tender, everything that you think of when snowflakes fall.
So, can I play it on Good Vibes for NEXT Christmas?

I'm of course beside Dana there: would be honored (wow!).

Tell me, by "next Christmas", you mean... Christmas 2011, right? So Dana, we would have nearly one year to do a version with voice of Carol of the Bells, and give Gloria a choice, right? Cool! ;-)

I would play both or more than the two next Christmas (2011). We've already arranged for "Carol of the Bells" to be played this Christmas coming up, but I would love to include "Soulflakes" next time around. I am sure other jazz stations would too if it were on CD.
Hope you're still enjoying the snow,

I read! That's really great!

C'mon let's get everyone back at his place: I'm just there for fun. Dana's a great professional and a sweet heart!! And you are working for "the cause" and that's really cool! Keep it up!

I'm sorry that yesterday we had so much snow that we came back home very late... so I missed your Wednesday show! :-( Looking forwad to the Christmas one if I can! 2 p.m. you said... that's 8 here. Well we might be back home! ;-)

Hi M-N,
Hope you can hear the December 25 show, especially the last little treat of Dana and his septet.
I chose the earliest time I was offered for the rebroadcast with all the Europeans in mind, hopefully to make it a more convenient listening time. Hope it works for some of you!

Hi Gloria,

I caught the first half of your show but had to run off to a gig before it ended. I was really enjoying your choices. I especially liked some of the tracks I heard with Randy Sutin. I will definitely try to catch the whole show on Christmas.

Great stuff Marie and Dana! There are so much wonderful things happening here online. I wish I had more time to keep up...

Marie, you are kicking ass on the vibes. Us guys should watch out...

And Dana, what a great idea and arrangement!

Philippe Thu, 12/09/2010 - 02:41

Marie and Dana,
I'm just catching up on this marvellous track ! Good tune, good lyrics, top of the art comping by Dana, and Marie really has a voice. Now Marie, don't tell me it's you playing the vibes solo. I've listened to it twice and I can't believe it. You've only had your vibraphone for how long ? More than ever, you deserve to be called the Vibes fairy !
A true admirer of both of you,

Nice to hear from you Philippe.

The twinkling "glock" sound you hear all over the tune is... Dana, on Nico's 4 oct... vibraphone!! haha!
Thanks Phil and Tj! But seriously, who wouldn't believe in the power of love and support? Surely not me!! I got tons from Dana!! Can't you hear it in my playing? ;-)

PS: we gotta talk for our kids project! Have you got time next week?

DanaSud Wed, 12/12/2018 - 11:17

Haven't posted in a long time. I came just to find this post. This was one of my favorite Vibes Workshop collaborations. It's funny that I still haven't met Marie in person even though I have been to Paris multiple times since my sister lives there (it never seems to work out).

Life has been overwhelmingly busy for me so I never have time for anything but a quick glance here and there to keep up with VW. Best wishes for the new year!
