Forum Topic: Does anyone else think of the vibe as a "falsetto" voice?

I struggle daily with issues involving music and many of them are just typical mid-life things but one of them is that I realized late into my musical life that the vibraphone has a "falsetto-sounding" voice to me. Not only the physical range of the instrument but it's sound seems "falsetto" to me. If I were to choose another instrument, I'd pick one that has a range in the natural male voice range. Anyone else ever thought of that? Yeah... I know.. I think too much. But the vibe just sounds so...falsetto.

Forum Topic: Good Vibes radio question

Hey everybody,
I am going to play Red Norvo's "How's Your Mother-In-Law" in my March show (March 6 and 9). Does anyone have any anecdotes about this tune, how it was named, for instance?
Feb is all set to go on Feb 6 and 9. We'll "visit" some warm and sunny places. Come with me!

Forum Topic: Lyrics/emotional content

Players,
As a dedicated music lover, but a non-musician, I have always had these questions and here is a great opportunity to ask them. If these topics have been covered before, I apologize.

How much, if at all, do lyrics affect your playing a tune? Is it important to you to read the lyrics when learning a song, if you don't already know them? How important is it to know the history of the song; if it was written for a movie or play, what the movie/play was about? Or is the emotional content of the tune relayed to you through the notes sufficient?

Forum Topic: Searching for mallet player in Minneapolis

I am looking for an open minded mallet percussionist in the Minneapolis area
There are two central concepts
1- My experimental project called "PyroPlasticFlow"
2- A lounge band with the mallet percussionist as the lead instrument
Both would be electronically based with a complete multi-media package including video projection
The first would satisfy the artistic need
The second would earn us enough money for me to buy you a Mallet Kat (if you don't already have one)

Forum Topic: Good Vibes radio show request--holiday program in Dec.

Hi all,
I am thinking about/planning my December/holiday radio show ("Good Vibes")
and am looking for jazz with vibes appropriate to the Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa season. Any ideas? I've got a few, looking for more. This program will air on December 5th, 2010.

I know this is very early for a program in December. It takes time to gather, research, listen to CDs (several times), and then decide what to play. I am also working on several shows at once (Sept, Oct, Nov too). Since I tape a few weeks early, there is less time than you might think!
