I started 6 but my sense of rhythm sucks. I went back to 5 to see how far I could get memorizing it. Tonight I got through the first 4 measures. Mainly by ear and hand position. Should I be thinking of something else to help memorize this or is it just playing over and over until it is memorized?

BTW, I had skimmed over 2, 3 & 4 to work on 5.

I'll continue to work on 6 little by little.

yeah, just add a bar at a time. go slow.

this is hard to start, but it's a skill that will help you out later. i think it's great you're persevering. if it was easy then everybody would be a vibe player! ha ha ha ha.

just small chunks, memorize little pieces at a time.

hey, i'm memorizing coltrane's solo on giant steps right now.

Hey Barry,

The way I do it is that I just set a goal when I go to practice that I'm gonna try to figure out 4 bars and memorize that. Or take 8 bars or whatever. It depends on the piece also. I'm now working on the Joy Spring etude, and it's hard, but if you focus on a few bars at a time it's ok, and you'll memorize faster and faster.

Also a thing you should always do is when you know all the notes of the stuff you are working on, play it in time! It doesn't matter how slow you do it, but make sure you play it in time. In this way you're playing music. Know what I mean?

Then the next practice session play the stuff you did before and add some bars to that.

Good work! Keep at it.
