Some more pan music. According to the person who posted the video, He is playing on the Swiss pan layout that he hasn't played on before. I can barely get around a regular pan set-up. It makes my brain hurt :( lol
Unfortunately there is no vibe solo but the music is cooking nonetheless. Nelson's comping is superb. At about 3:00 they flash on Steve and it looks like he is using Mainieri style grip. Then about 40 seconds later they show him again and it looks like he has the mallet between ring and middle fingers. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or did he switch?
Over the years I have had several vibraphone and marimba students learn and study hymns and chorales. These are wonderful tools for developing chordal playing, voice leading techniques, and learning theory. All of this can be translated into jazz playing and developing comping skills. I even use them as daily sight reading exercises.
