Yesterday, Barry asked me if I thought the software I use for production could clear the frame noise out of the wonderful performance that David had posted several years ago. The short answer is, yes, it can and it can do it without much detrimental effect upon the music.
Ive always loved this album with Deborah Brown and the Sandviken Big Band so I learned the vocal solo by ear yesterday and recorded it. Its so cool to play with a big band..:) great way to pass a horrible day of rain and wind

There are 4 files here.
This section deals with the first part of Caravan.
C7 for 6 bars then Fmin
But I broke this into small chunks to work on the basics of the A sections.
We talk about using the Alt scale on a 7th chord to get to the minor. You can also use what's called a Spanish Phrygian
Sometimes on the A section people play C7b9 to Dbmaj9 for the 6 bars and then resolve to Fmin
Sometimes people C7b9 using Spanish Phrygian (this is just F harmonic minor from C in this case).
Sometimes people play C7b9 to an Fmin maj 7 (melodic minor scale).
This is my transcription of Sonny Stitt's recording of the great standard. He plays some beautiful lines on melody and solo I get slightly ahead at times and thats a learning curve in itself, Ive learned so much from this project. Thanks in advance for listening.
For me the ability to phrase on the vibraphones is essential to communicating one's musical message. Nuance of attack, length of notes, dynamics within 2,3 or 4 notes, combining legato, staccato within a phrase, varying space within ideas; all these nuances are tools and when used musically, give your message life and depth. I love working on these concepts using changes to standards or just playing free. I've chosen rhythm changes here because they're familiar, and a medium swing feel. Swinging eighth notes are also a way to phrase lines.
I’ll Remember April in Bb using my Mallet Kat and Boss RC-3 loop pedal as accompaniment.
