Playing the classic song "Darn That Dream" with inspiration from the great pianists like Art Tatum, Errol Garner, Dave McKenna, Teddy Wilson and Oscar Peterson. I was listening to Tatum (Pablo recordings) this week during the commute to Boston. I hadn't listened for awhile. Still unbelievable.

I invited some young musicians to my apartment for a little jam and since I got new mikes and some killer Adam studio monitors I wanted to record a bit of it just for fun. Totally unmixed, just a bit of EQ on the vibes, and only one mike on the piano and drums and bass. The bass player is a young american, fairly new in Berlin, Josh Ginsburg.
I love the sound of the vibes!

Here are a couple of versions of Summertime with a Cha Cha Band-in-a-Box accompaniment. The attached solo version is with BIAB drum track only. There, I am practicing the bass pattern while playing the melody.

I also attached an arrangement (PDF), and an audio file generated by Sibelius.

This is a great exercise for all levels, but very good for beginning level players!

Had fun working on this one. Some great tunes written by Paul McCartney. Also some great tunes written by Lennon and Harrison that would be great on solo vibes. Use to play this on solo vibe hotel gigs way back.

I was practicing lines over one of my favorite tunes, "Pent Up House", by Sonny Rollins. My inspiration for this exercise was the melodic and rhythmic strength of Sonny's lines. He always plays the song and you can hear it in every chorus.
The second challenge for me was to make the harmonic movement audible with every line and phrase.
Not an easy task. And then, of course, there's the ultimate challenge when playing lines without accompaniment or a metronome; keeping the time!
