RIP Terry Breese

I want to acknowledge the life of a teacher and friend who passed away suddenly at the age of 61 last week Saturday May 8, 2010.

I started takeing drum lessons from Terry when I was 7 yrs. old. I continued with him until I was 15 yrs old and had a friendship with him through out my life. Terry was an excellent teacher, always encouraging, supportive and gave me a good reality check a couple of times when I needed it. He was never demeaning, just a regular guy, and a very nice and caring one at that.

Four Note Groupings, Part Two

Hello Everyone, here's Part Two of the Four Note Groupings article which will be appearing in the upcoming June issue of the Percussive Arts Society magazine Percussive Notes. This article addresses the use of four note groupings on Dom 7 chords as well as the application of the four note grouping concept on two choruses of Stella by Starlight. 把melodic 音階當作調式(modes)的方式來練習。
先演奏一個固定低音,從第一級的melodic 開始打,也就是C melodic scale.
試著即興,然後找出一些Pattern, 或是你喜愛的一些Lick(樂句)
接著換打第二級melodic ,也就是Bb melodic scale, 但是固定低音不變。
再來是三級melodic scale, 也就是 A melodic scale。
四級,G melodic scale
五級, F melodic scale
六級, Eb melodic scale
七級, Db melodic scale
再來回到一級。
有些音階要小心處理,一不小心就是失去音階的色調聲響(tonality),就聽起來不像那個音階了。
有些音階聽起來就是等待被解決,像是Altered 音階。
練習曲子的時候,可以想想哪些和弦可以用到這些音階。

C為起音的第七級Melodic scale, (C Altered scale)
如果把C這個音當作是一個Melodic scale 的第七個音,往下推(大七度),可以得到Db。
所以你可以把C Altered 音階想成Db melodic scale, 但是從C音開始打。
這個音階為,C,Db,Eb,E(Fb),Gb,Ab,Bb,C
這個音階的音,會經過C7#5, C7b5, C7#9, C7b9和弦。
i- V - I 中的V可以非常非常常見到這個音階,
把這個音階放到12個不同的調中練習,你會學習到很多。

Sarabande from Bach's Sonatas & Partitas for Violin by Ted Wolff

This piece, a sarabande from Sonata IV in D minor, is a slow thoughtful piece and a good 4 mallet exercise. Use the 4 mallets for melody lines as well the block chords. For instance, in bar 6 you’ll find it handy to use 4 to play the wide intervals in the line. The same approach should be used in bar 23 where the melody line jumps around a lot.

C為起音的第六級Melodic scale, (C Locrian with #2 scale)
如果把C這個音當作是一個Melodic scale 的第六個音,往下推(大六度),可以得到Eb。
所以你可以把C Locrian #2 音階想成Eb melodic scale, 但是從C音開始打。
這個音階為,C,D,Eb,F,Gb,Ab,Bb,C
這個音階的音,會經過C minor7b5 和弦。
所以看到C minor7b5和弦時, 可以用C Locrian #2音階。
放到和絃進行中:C minor7b5 - F7b9 - Bbminor7
但是因為Locrian with #2 scale 有還原D音(natural 2nd),所以聽起來像是要解決到Bb major scale。
但不一定要解決到Bbmajor音,也可以解決到原本常見的Bbminor。這個還原D音(natural 2nd)讓這個C minor7b5 - F7b9聽起來更有趣。

練習方式:設定一個速度(Set a groove), 然後開始即興這個音階,並且12個調都要練習到。

C為起音的第五級Melodic scale, (C mixolydian b6)
如果把C這個音當作是一個Melodic scale 的第五個音,那往下推(完全五度),可以得到F。
所以你可以把C mixolydian b6音階想成F melodic scale, 但是從C音開始打。
這個音階為,C,D,E,F,G,Ab,Bb,C (跟大調音階相比,降六音,降七音)
Tony是示範mixolydian b6和mixolydian 的差別。
Ab, G , E, C這是 tony最愛的Lick(樂句)之一,也有經過這個音階。
來聽聽tony影片最後把這個lick演奏在dominant 和絃上。

跟Lydian dominant scale比,這個音階有還原四音(Natural 4th)、降六音。
