Saturn's child by Joe Locke

Here a beautiful ballad played with a marvellous group behind him. If you go on YouTube with that video there is the whole concert (all the tunes are of an incredible level). Quality sound and video, the guitar player is a blast too, and we can see and hear wery well how Joe is comping. A lot of inspiration and emotion. The video shows very well how they deal with a modern jazz sound, with effects, good PA etc...
Enjoy !

Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams - Locke/Saindon

A clip of Joe and I playing the standard (1931) Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams. A fun tune to play stride and 4 beats to bar time feel as in Freddie Green w/Basie, Dave McKenna, Errol Garner, George Shearing, etc. These changes are what McKenna plays. Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans play something a bit different on the A section. Here's a copy of the lead sheet: http://www.scribd.com/doc/63417220/Wrap-Your-Troubles-in-Dreams-Lead-Sh…

Vibe Diary - August 25, 2011

It's funny to see this talk about learning tunes. I have 3 tunes to learn. 2 I have never played and one I've forgotten.

Jubilation (new)
Que-Tee (new)
Conception (forgot)

I spent the last 2 hours on Jubilation. I learned the melody first and then the chords. Just playing along with Cannonball (one version) and Art Farmer (the other). Two different versions. Then I checked the harmony.

Detroit JazzFest 2011: Gary, Joe & Warren

This year Gary Burton - Joe Locke - Warren Wolf are all playing at the festival, woo-hoo!! I'm hoping to meet them. I met Joe the last time he was here with his Milt Tribute band. Joe took time after his set to chat with me for a few minutes and I got a pic with him. It was a real thrill for me. Of course Joe's just a regular guy who happens to play the vibes, I've found that out about all the pro's here. This is what's so great about this site. Everyone from the novice to the pro coming here sharing, learning and encouraging.

Vibe Diary - August 23, 2011

I did a recording session yesterday and something awful happened. We were playing the tune Move by Denzel Best. I couldn't play one part of the tune. I had to practice it for 20 minutes. I realized that I got into a bad habit or something over the summer and my right hand changed. I actually had to work the problem out in the studio (all friends, luckily) and come home and think about the problem. I can't really explain what it was but my right hand was moving a little differently from my left. I could feel it changing back as I practiced during the day and night. It was weird.
