Had some fun yesterday in the home studio playing the classic "On the Sunnyside of the Street" on marimba and hi hats.

Still working on time feel. It's coming. If you can snap it, I can play it !

Not everyone does the holiday music thing, but this is not your average Jingle Bells....great arrangement by Kim Pensyl for his album Early Snowfall we recorded last summer with homage to Miles's TuTu album. Kim Pensyl-piano, Rusty Burge-vibes, Rick VanMatre-flute, Mike Sharfe-bass and John Taylor-drums.

At home today playing the Gershwin classic "Someone To Watch Over Me" with a steady left hand groove along with some right hand octaves. Inspired from the great pianists that excel in this style including masters like Art Tatum, Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner, George Shearing, Dave McKenna and Teddy Wilson.

December's show is this coming Sunday, Dec 6, usual time, 8-10p eastern. This month's "Three By..." is dedicated to Dave Pike, who we lost in October. I'll play "Cheryl," "Anticipation" and my very favorite, a tune by guitarist Volker Kriegel, "Vian-De." If you have not heard this delicate piece, by all means listen to the show. It tugs at heartstrings.

Well, after months of fun work had by me, I have finally released my book "Free Verse and Photos in the Key of Jazz." In it there are 36 verses built entirely of jazz tune titles, a format that is completely original and my crazy idea. They vary from the shortest with four titles to the longest with 73, "My Little Brown Book." Each one centers around a theme. E.g., "Alexander's Ragtime Band" includes characters like "Mingus Fingus" and "Mack the Knife." Even the poem titles are song titles.

Revisiting a beautiful song written by the great bassist Steve Swallow. I first learned this composition while studying with Gary as a student at Berklee in the 70s. Steve wrote so many great compositions and this is certainly one of them.
