We just heard Alice Mc Leod-Coltrane on some of Terry Gibbs special tracks here. I was just wondering... We've heard that she, among piano, harp, organ, also played the vibes... But there are nearly no information on that part of her…
Check out Terry and Alice Coltrane. Who does Alice Coltrane sound like?? I won't give my impression yet.
This is totally swinging stuff!
Terry gave me permission to post this.
This is a practice vid of "But Beautiful" w/ some examples of the "stair climbing" thing I spoke about at the Philly workshop. At approx 2:43, I used stair climbing exactly as I explained it at the workshop (Bmi7b5…
Today was awesome!!! After about 4 hours of sleep and a huge breakfast I hit the road for Philly. With only two wrong turns I was about 5 minutes late.
We took the hour trip down to Delaware University (where the next workshop is going to…
This is for Barry! Here's a slow mo' of 4 in 1 with a really nice stick drop at the end. (Inside joke for long time, vibesworkshop members).
Maybe this will be of some help with the etude.
I left the sticks after the throw up there for all…
Stéphane was a subscriber online here for a long time. He went on to focus on the hand drums, but he's a really good vibe player. Check him out. We miss him (known as Tifoo on the site)
Practicing tunes in other keys is a great exercise. Recently Tony and I had a short discussion on the benefits of transposing. It reminded me of "Comrade Conrad", a beautiful Bill Evans tune that actually moves up a 5th to a new key every…
I was inspired by Carla Jenkins' really pretty version of "This Masquerade", and decided to make it my practice tune for the night. I didn't have the melody written out, so I was doing it by memory/ear. Need to work on that part.
I'll…
Hi All,
I'm getting near completing the Vibesworkshop on Roku app I talked about earlier, but I'm not happy with the graphics elements that I've come up with. I'm hoping that someone here has more graphic design talent than I have and is…
Here's one more tune from my 5-March gig -- "500 Miles High". With me are Doug Sondak on flute, Richard Hale-Shaw on bass and Ed Conley on drums. Enjoy :-).

Hey all,
I ran into this clip on YouTube, and thought I should share it.
I love Hamp, but he was not a player I listened to a lot as a student. However, I appreciate him more every day and I found this clip to be awesome. Really in his…
Here is someone who obviously adores Milt Jackson, as do a lot of people on this site. However, even though this person does not obviously "sound" like Milt, they have managed to play an exact solo by Milt with his nuances. Enjoy!
Ok, here's the first 6 mallet guy I've seen playing more like a jazz player and playing some lines. dritske posted a comment with this link. I thought I'd put the vid up here.
I think when you learn a tune you should come up with a SIMPLE solo version of each tune. I also think that studying any part of any tune is a major source of information. I've been working on Speak Low thanks to Behn!
