I'm just talking through the tune Peace. My 2 cents kind of thing!!!
This is an etude for Donna Lee that is all 8th notes. Of course we don't necessarily want to play a solo like this, but it's a good study in weaving around the changes.
This another short practice video working on "Tangerine." There is a brief warm up then a take of the arrangement I have been working on. If anyone is interested, I can write it out and post a pdf. The next step is putting it all together with some improvising.
I've made other lessons here with the same theme. Make it sound like the song.
It's our job in a way. Sure the heavy weights do this or that. But a true heavy weight can make it sound like the song. Once you have mastered that then you can take liberties. Listen to some of the solo Chick Corea CDs. He takes liberties but he's a monster!
I've done other etudes with Cherokee, but here's a new one. I like doing certain tunes even if I'm doing another something for that tune. Some tunes have so many progressions in them that when you learn them, you learn many many other tunes at the same time because they have pieces of these progressions. So learn this one again it's best. If you memorize it, play it and play it and play it study it study the harmony study the upper partial, see what you remember when you make up your own solo or you do your own comping.
Here's what to know and do:
Here's an etude on the tune I Could Write A Book. Chord melody and solo.
I wrote in the chords for the first time through the tune. You write the rest in and look at the alterations of the chords!
Check out the audio to see what it's supposed to sound like. I'd love to see you post your version!
The vibe sample is from the company Orange Tree. And if you know who Ed Smith is, it's his vibes and mallets. Sound great!
Especially when studying jazz standards, each tune can teach you something.
In this tune I'm briefly checking out Minority because it's a minor tune with major 2 5's and they move in a sequence. So play the same lick or idea on every chord!
I play a tune we all know and talk about it.
