Surfer Rock + Vibes

Every now and then, we talk about the use of vibes outside the context of jazz.

I just became aware yesterday that this track, which includes the first recorded tracks I did with Miss Magnolia (my Deagan Imperial), was released a few years ago.  They had asked for a “vintage sound”, so my thought was to go with her, some old Albright mallets, and a pair of tube based mics.

I want to do more of this.  :)

The Pennypack Suite

I just modified this post to point to Marianne's video from the grounds of the Pennypack Trust. Music is now also higher fidelity than the prior link. :)

I mentioned this in the coffeehouse a few weeks back. It is out now, although there is an issue with iTunes pricing we are working to correct, so we aren't advertising it widely yet. It is available on Amazon at the correct price and is on or will be on most streaming platforms.

Enjoy!

This video might be a little similar to Tony's "marking the tune" video, in that it is another way to outline the changes, and make the "pretty notes" flow together. Anyway, it was inspired by a banjo player: Danny Barnes who I first heard of from this sight a long time ago when Tony posted a link from his blog.

footprints

I haven't been an active member for a long time, but I'm hoping to change that. I thought I would start with a recent video of my quartet playing "footprints" at a local club. Please also check out my website and leave me some feedback. I've never made a site before and would welcome constructive criticism.

Interpreting Standards

I came across this Bill Evans clip yesterday and it made me think about the discussion of this tune a while back. I think it was on this site that someone said they thought this tune was best as a ballad, especially given the dark tone of the movie. But I actually feel that when a composition is being interpreted, it is fine to treat it purely as music and not worry about any of that. The whole point is to do something more personal with it.. This tune can be a beautiful ballad, but a lot of guys like to swing on it (check out the Frisell and Sco versions linked below as well).
