I have up here an old lesson on stride vibes. That style of playing has been on my mind lately so I took another shot at putting together lessons on playing in that way.

Stride playing is an advanced concept. You have to have an understanding of harmony and an understanding of lines and moving lines in chords. So it takes some work.

This is a 6 part lesson.

I apologize if this is totally cheezy. But It kicked my ass. Go easy on me.

This tune kicked my ass Bigtime. I still can't believe it. I heard Charlie Haden sing it and fell in love with it. I tried to play, thinking it would be a piece of cake and it was so hard for me. Those sixths in the melody, playing the chords very simply. The dampening. I spent several days on this tune.

I played it at the vibe hang and didn't think I did it justice and tried to do a decent recording.

We´ve made this unique 4 octaves vibe for the ¨school of performing arts¨ in NY.
It´s an all white and gold instrument, modelled after the king George Marimba, where both white and gold surfaces are finished with a high shine clear lacquer, with gold shiffers embedded in the lacquer (too bad it doesn´t show in the picture).

Making this instrument was a pain, but the result was worth it.

I'm just back from our hang, and in the middle of it I got a message from Umbria Jazz Festival (Italy) alerting me about a new very very fresh video of Joe!

I knew Joe was to play a duet with amazing french pianist Martial Solal (FYI, MS is 81 years old, and 20 in his fingers!). I had asked and they very nicely sent me an email with weblink!

Here is a sample of that gig, which took place today at 4 p.m. western Europe time... which is... some 5 hours ago!

Don't they both look like kids in a playground?!!

I just found the freshest news from one of Joe's very recent performances at Umbria (Italy). This video was just posted today. The gig can only be one or two days old! There's Bob Cranshaw on double bass (!), Joe Labarbera on drums and surely Dado Moroni on piano...

Oh man! Isn't that great! A postcard from Italy! :o)

This Saturday 1/3/9, we'll have a vibe hang at 1 oclock. Myself and Behn Gillece will be here and we'll play and hang out. The hang is from 1 to about 3.

Also in the subscriber section of the site, there's tons and tons happening. We're all in a discussion studying Wagner and modulating in 3rds! All of us including Dave Friedman who uses a lot of classical music in his jazz teaching! This is pretty wild stuff.

There are lessons going up every week including the latest ones on target notes, licks, improv and a duet.

Talking about swing!!! man, this album swings to the max. I just love Monty Alexander. Also a member of the site, Frits Landesergen, plays drums with the Monty Alexander Trio when he plays in Europe. Pretty cool.

Anyway I know some stuff Monty did with Jef hamilton also, I'm not sure if Jeff plays on this album, but I think he does, by the sound of it....

This is really a great cd...so Buy it!!

Or get Rhapsody! I'm addicted to that. You only pay like 10 bucks a month and you can listen to everything!! sooo cooolll!!

I didn't really know this cd untill I listened to it now and I think it's pretty great. Don't expect Burton to imitate Red Norvo, Milt, Hampton or Cal Tjader on this cd.... it's really Burton that you hear, but that's the thing I think is so great about this cd.

Check this video of Billy Taylor talking about Ben Webster and listen to Ben play in the middle of the video (follow link below). It is so beautiful. Here's a great place to learn about phrasing. Watch his face as he plays a phrase. Doesn't it look like he's talking.

Check out his laid back feel. That's what I mean, what is any teacher or book gonna show you that you can't find by listening and studying. IMHO - we're (teachers) are second after listening to the gods.

this is one of my favorite songs to play .. the words are gorgeous. The first time i heard this song was from the Locke and Barron duo... joe that version of the tune and your playing bring tears to my eyes ... masterfully played... well here is my stab at the tune. this was more just a test to see if my mic was working, first take. the first time thru the head i approached it as more rubato. and not strict on the melody, however at the end the melody was the center focus.. ive im not mistakened this is device that Coltrane used alot ...

I spent about 15 hours practicing a tune I wrote, 'Song For Meg'. I've always had trouble playing it solo. So I decided to really work through it and here it is.

I did most of the things I say here on the site, which then made me want to talk about it here. I separated the melody, worked on the chords, worked on my lines.

I spent a lot of time weaving the chords together and finding ways of being as melodic as I could be.

MSN's - Mandatory Strike Notes! :-) Sorry about the dumb name!!

This is all about MSN's. In other words moving from chords to chords there are notes that just HAVE TO be played. If they're not in your line then they have to be somewhere EVEN IF YOU JUST HIT THEM. They're needed to make the harmony move. When you really know what are the important notes of a tune then you can comp easier and play lines easier.

And if you target those notes in your lines, they'll help really make it all clear!

Beta Test Skype for Small Vibe Hangs - Beginners Conference

I'm having an idea and I'd like to try it out. That is using skype to do little get togethers. Like a vibe hang for just 3 or 4 people. I need to learn more about it because I think I can have 3 or 4 people in the core and then a bunch of listeners.

I've been working on the sound for skype, and I don't even know if it's feasible to do this although I teach lessons online via skype and it works pretty good.

I would hook up my cams and mics and you guys would just do audio.

Remember, Memorize it. Learn the words, sing with Billie and Ella and Sara, whoever. The words will help if you're stuck. Get into the tune and have fun learning it.

Here is a link to the bach partitas and sonatas book. I don't know if this is the best edition, but I think everyone can probably get it at his or hers local music store for about 10 or 20 bucks. I got mine second hand for about 7 bucks. And it's in good shape.

I haven't heard much talk here about the bach sonatas and partitas, but I believe that this is realy valuable material to learn to play solo vibes and lines and counterpoint. Man, I think we can all agree that Charlie Parker is the reincarnation of Bach.

Hey Everyone,

I just stumbled upon this Mike Mainieri Discography. It has some pretty good stuff on there. I actually found it looking for info on his cd: Other side of the Blues.

And I found out that he also played as a sideman on a guitar tribute to the beatles album. At least the info is hard to get, but I listened to a track of Norwegian Wood and it has vibes and some marimba like stuff on it. So if mr mainieri is around, maybe he can confirm this...?

Steps Ahead - Absolute Must Have CD

This CD changed my life. I had never heard vibes played in this way before. If you haven't heard Mikes solo on the Don Grolnick tune 'Pools' get ready. I listened to this solo non stop when I got it. Transcribed it, studied it inside and out.

He had pickups on his vibes before anyone else, he was triggering synths before anyone else.

One of my all time favorite cds!

Here's a video from 1983 of one of my favorite Mainieri tunes.

Mike's an idol of mine. If you don't the early Steps Ahead stuff you DON'T have any idea of what you're missing. He took the vibes in a whole new direction. When I got the Steps Ahead cd, I had never heard anything like it on the vibes. Add to that the all star cast and what a band.

I saw him several times and was blown away each and every time!

I love playing with Mark Przybylowski on bass who comes over and plays all the time. I love what happened at the end of the tune! It's my favorite part listening back!!

This is pretty cool! Check out Joe's solo. I was just looking around and this floored me. The thing I also dig is their re-interpretation of the tune. I hear a lot of reinterpretations these days and a lot are so far removed from the original that I personally get a little turned off. It's obvious that Keeser knows the path back to Summertime (IMHO).

I personally LOVE to play in situations where there is no bass or drums. This would be a dream CD for me.
