Philippe Macé : vibraphone player, percussionnist, teacher and composer.

After having been a young drummer, browser of the most diverse musical landscapes of his time (rythm' & blues, pop, rock'n'roll, etc), Ph Macé graduates at the Superior National Music Conservatory of Paris (CNSM). Very fast he approaches his musician's life by participating in many performance and recording sessions in a wide register, demonstrating his ability and versatility. In 1976 Ph Macé becomes member of the « Ensemble Intercontemporain » as soon as it was created. He works then under the direction of Pierre Boulez for 5 years and gets very involved working with composers such as K. Stockhausen, L. Berio, Xenakis, among others associated in particular with Ircam (Institute for music/acoustic research and coordination, Paris).

In the mean time after studying at the Berkley School of Music in Boston (1979/80), he extends his work towards improvisation and jazz music fields. He performed in the festivals of Antibes-Juan les Pins, Paris, Donaueschingen, Angoulème, Coutance, Nancy, Amiens, Le Mans, la Villette in Paris and others. In 1998, he got a commission by Radio France to write a piece for jazz ensemble which is created in the festival « Présences ». In this moment he’s involved in differents artistic commitments going from solos performances to small formation and contemporary chamber music.

Very involved in percussion and jazz education, he taught at the percussion departement of the Haute École de Musique de Geneve from 2009 to 2011. He teaches the improvisation and jazz vibraphone at the Conservatoire Rayonnement Régional of Paris and at the Pôle Supérieur Paris-Boulogne. According to his meetings he collaborates with François Jeanneau (Pandemonium), J.F. Jenny Clark, Serge Lazarévitch, Daniel Humair, Marc Ducret, Martial Solal, Patrice Caratini, Michel Legrand, David Friedman, Trilok Gurtu, Didier Lockwood, Éric Barret, Dave Liebman, Mark Feldman, among others with his favorites instruments, the vibraphone and the marimba, on the stages of the living music or in the sharing of workshops and Masterclasses.
