Vibesworkshop on Roku: creating your subscriber channel

Summary:
Instructions for creating subscriber channels on Vibesworkshop.com on Roku

The Vibesworkshop.com on Roku application allows subscribers to create individualized channels of videos for display (see Check This Out for more info on the app). At release, I've seeded the app with channels for Ed Saindon, Joe Locke, Tony Miceli and myself.

To create your own channel, go to http://vibes.phelan-4.com/roku/ and sign in with your Vibesworkshop username and password. Initially you'll need to create your channel, so click on the "Make your channel" link. Enter the requested data in the form and click "Submit" to create your channel. The most difficult part of this is the logo -- it's best if the logo image is 290x218, and there's a limit of 100K bytes for the size, so don't try to upload something directly from your 8M pixel camera :-).

After you've created your channel, you can add videos by clicking on the "Add new video" link. The easiest thing to do here is to grab a video from YouTube. Just copy the YouTube URL or embed code and paste it into YouTube URL input box and click "Submit". The video title, description, thumbnail and length will be filled in automatically from the YouTube data.

After you've submitted a YouTube video the highest resolution version will be downloaded and converted automatically. You can monitor the progress of this via the "Status" column of the video list (refresh the page to see updates). When the status reaches "Ready", click on "Ready" to view your video (you'll need to have QuickTime installed).

You can also upload videos directly from your computer. This is more work but it'll give you more control over the results since conversion isn't needed. The Roku Player plays in 720p so 1024x720 pixels is the best size for the videos.

If anyone has any problems, questions or comments, post them here or e-mail me at tom at phelan-4 dot com.

1000+ installs of the Roku app

As of this morning, the Roku app has been installed on 1,019 players. In the first day of the availability of the Android app, it was installed on 20 phones -- not quite the pace of the Roku app, but the Android installed base is much, much bigger than the Roku installed base, so there's great opportunity for the Android installs to grow.

Subscribers, this is an opportunity to reach some new people! Go to http://vibes.phelan-4.com/roku/ to set up your subscriber channel. It's easy to set up the channel with videos that you already have on YouTube. Dana did it last week, and his videos have been viewed 288 times since then. There have been 1,703 video views since the Roku app went public.

Vibesworkshop now a Roku public channel

The Vibesworkshop on Roku is now available as a "public" app -- meaning that it shows up in the Roku Channel Store on every player and can be installed directly from there, without knowing the "secret handshake" install method. It has now been installed on 243 Roku players -- oops! I just checked again and it's up to 246.

It's likely that none of the 200+ installations made in the last couple of days are by current vibesworkshop users, so subscribers with a body of videos available, there's an opportunity here to reach a bigger audience with your work. Follow the instructions above to make your channel and get something out there. It only takes a few minutes to get up and running with several videos.

The only channels currently there are for Ed Saindon, Joe Locke, Tony, me and Jack Reilly. So Behn, Mike, Randy (Sutin and Cloutier), Holger, and any other subscribers with some video to post, go for it!

Done! :)

That was quick and easy. I don't have a Roku box and try not to watch too much TV but this seems like a cool way of getting internet content to a new audience. Thanks Tom!

Great

Good to know that it is actually easy :-). I love the logo! Content is awesome too :-).

channel made

Need to create channel

Hi Jack,

You seem to have added videos without creating your channel. Click on the "Make a new channel" link near the top, fill in the form and click "Submit". Then your channel will show up under "The Musicians", with your videos in your channel.

I guess I shouldn't have allowed adding videos without creating a channel :-(, but your videos can be found right now in "Recent Additions".

Tom P.

PS. I notice that you haven't linked your Roku player to your vibesworkshop account yet -- you won't be able to see the members and subscribers only videos until you do that (go to the "Link" icon at the top-level screen on the Vibeworkshop Roku app).

Oops!

Hi Jack,

I've found and fixed a bug in the channel create code -- sorry about that. You should be able to create your channel now.

Tom P.

PS. I notice that toddc has been trying to create a channel too. Todd, it should work for you now too.

Adding to your Roku

Hi Jack,

You need to add the channel to your Roku -- go to https://owner.roku.com/Account/channelcode/ (from your computer) and enter the channel code ZZTGX.

Once you do that within the next 24 hours the Vibesworkshop.com channel will appear in the Roku's top-level menu, along with Netflix, etc.

See http://www.vibesworkshop.com/video/vibesworkshopcom-roku-now-available/t... here for more details, including how to speed up getting the channel installed.

Roku Up and Running

Tom,
everything is working nicely now. For anyone with a Roku setup, U R in for a nice treat.
i can imagine this channel would go over well in the general Roku community for any one interested in hearing and learning about jazz with emphasis on Vibes.
again... tom great job!
jack

Thanks

Hi Jack,

Glad you've gotten it working and like it. I've certainly been enjoying using it myself and I hope we'll get some others to use it too.

It's nice to know that you think there might be some general interest in the channel. I'm planning on submitting the channel as a public channel soon, when I can find time to get it done. If Roku accepts it, the channel will then appear in their channel store and you won't need to know the secret handshake to install :-).

Enjoy!
